Teachers
- Creating warm and caring relationships between students and teachers is critical
- Teachers who gain close relationships will be able to see differences in the children and detect any type of warnings they show.
Teachers must pay close attention to poverty related behaviors such as:
- Language
- Development
- Aggression
- Hostility
- Attendance / Prepared
- Achievement (Assignments, Studying)
Teachers must be aware of the students differences in learning due to diverse classrooms
- Make connections to home and at school
- Content and lessons should be understandable and related to diverse classrooms
- Constructivism - Learning is active based off experiences and prior knowledge
This is very important for students to learn through asking questions and creating their own conclusions based on their personal learning experiences.
Teachers need to place an emphasis on sparking that desire to learn or (motivation) by not only helping to restore the child’s self-image but also by encouraging students to see the demands and rewards of schooling. Children will work hard, for intrinsic rewards, only if they have a very good reason (Ciaccio, 2000).
By providing emotional support, modeling, and other forms of scaffolding, teachers can help students use their strengths, skills, and knowledge to develop and learn (Marlowe and Page, 1999).
Learning by doing gives students the opportunity to be active and imaginative problem solvers (Bassey, 1996).
Slavin (1998) says instead of viewing students as At-Risk, we should see them as At-Promise.
-At Risk= An aspect of the child or environment that increases the probability of poor outcome. (Bergin & Bergin, 2000)
-At-Promise = realize the students potential and realize the impact that can be made for students in poverty.
*Curriculum plays vital role in the classroom and must be created to meet the needs of all students.
- Teachers should motivate students to
